  • Sulphur candle in polytunnel?

Hi there, I'm getting conflicting advice about this so I thought I'd ask the experts (that's all you grapes)

Can I set off a sulphur candle in my empty polytunnel? I wouldn't normally even contemplate it, but I had a big pest problem this year and would like to erradicate the over-wintering RSM and whitefly if I can. I always scrub it out anyway, but I think drastic action might be called for

Anyone know what the dilute sulphuric acid does to the particular plastic used for tunnels?

    Thanks in advance

I think a sulphur candle would be wasted in a tunnel unless it is a small one. I use Provado for red spider and thrips but am hoplng the severe winter we are having will kill of any eggs overwintering

Ken smith is right, this good cold snap should kill of a lot of bugs and diseases but a Sulphur candle will make sure. Just check the are it can be used for because I have a sneaky suspicion you will need more than one sulphur candle.

      Good luck

i have a sulphur hotbox, was about a tenner on ebay .... you put sulphur crystals in and leave it plugged in for 4 hours, and you can even use it when you're growing crops, .... although i would only use it if you get a severe problem, as it kills good bugs too xx

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
