    Default Snow damage........

Just visited the allotment. Two of my greenhouses have glass which has succumbed to the weight of the snow.
I've never seen this before and didn't tralise snow could be so heavy.
My next door neighbour has a massive polytunnel. It has a 75mm diameter curved steel framework which spans about 10 metres. The polythene is intact but the steel piping is buckled and bent to the ground with the weight of snow.
When nature decides to show us her true colours she is unstoppable

I had to carve blocks of frozen snow off the area where the glass has broken and fell out. Reminicent of video's I've seen of eskimos making an igloo.
I have chooks in one of these greenhoused and its amazing none were decapitated. Bitsof glass are stuck vertically in the soil below the broken windows.
Temporarily I've wedged a wooden board over the top to stop them flying out but if it gets windy (raw nature again) cripes knows what will happen.

    Be safe out their folks!

Good luck Snadge, I'd be tempted to replace them with polycarb. Both my GH have held up well with all of this white stuff.

I dont thing you will be on your own, Snadger.
My greenhouses are in my back garden so battled down to clear some of the snow off the glass and metal one after the snow eased up.. The other is plastic and wood so it not as much of a worry. Here is a poor quality video is did for my friends abroad who never see snow.

I would basically have to cover the whole inside of the roof!

I have taken the glass out completely (what was left) and replaced it with a wooden board on one area for now. The other area is being held up with mesh until the snow goes.
I have some polycarbonate but I'll have to put a lot more wooden braces in before fitting as the glass panes that are in the roof are about 6 foot long X 2 foot 6 inches wide each!

The greenhouse with the chooks in is now evolving into a SHED with every pane of glass that breaks.
I have now screwed some plywood in one area and have tin sheeting with a paving flag holding it in position in another area.

The greenhouse now looks a bit like one of those shanty town houses you see in downtown Soweto!

Pulled about half of the roof off including the spars on my main greenhouse. Need two 8 foot lengths of 3X2 from Wickes now to repair the roof. I'll set the spars in positions dictated by the width of glass I have in a pile of window glass I have at top of allotment.I new it would come in handy one day.

I wouldn't have known either, but when I was putting my GH up it had a big bold section at the bottom saying to brush snow off the roof due to the weight... so I did as soon as I got home!

Great Video Roger as you know I'm not that far from you so we've had the same amount of snow, I didn't make it up to plot 1 till yesterday, only went to pick my wheelbarrow up but I'm happy to report that there as been no damage thank goodness, there's nothing on plot 2 as of yet so I'm not going down there just yet...

To succeed in life, you need three things, a wishbone, a back bone and a funny bone.

My wife won't let me in the garden at home. She says I just like cutting things down!

That's not true. I like cutting things up too!
