    Default Putting together a greenhouse.

    Hi,
I want to buy a 6x8 greenhouse. Any ideas as the best place to get them and how easy are they to put together? What is involved?
    Thanks
    Steff

    hi
    i have a 6 x 8 greenhouse which i got from b&q (mainly because son works there)
OH put it together for me and he reckons most important bit is making sure the base is level so it goes up nice and square. it took him a saturday afternoon and part of sunday. I just helped with identifying parts! It didn't seem too difficult

Well fingers crossed for me then! I'm getting a greenhouse on Saturday free-for-nothing! Through a friend of a friend of a friend - you know what I mean My son-in-law, grandson, granddaughter's boyfriend and a couple of taggers-on are going to take it down and bring it to my garden all in bits. I've still to prepare a level base for it, so it'll be stacked "somewhere" till that's done, but I want it ready NOW. I've got so many plans for it

"are going to take it down and bring it to my garden all in bit"

I recommend taking a permanent marker pen and writing a number on each side of each "joint" so that it is easy to marry them up again.

And take LOADS of photographs of all the detail.

Strong gloves too for handling the glass, and something to stack the glass vertically in, or against, in the car. A wooden box would be good.

    Here's a picture of mine:

I'll show him that photo to explain what I mean about stacking the glass. Have already told him about wearing strong gloves for the glass, as for the marker pen .............. I'll tell him, but will he listen to his mum-in-law? He's the sort of joker who'd mark everything wrong just for a laugh
I'll let you know how we get on, and I'll even take a photo when it's all assembled in my garden. Got to move a peony and an olive tree before it can go down, and got to find some slabs for the base too! Freecycle, I'm on the look-out again

Maureen, when your greenhouse arrives can I suggest that you hide the frame somewhere if it's aluminium until you are ready to assemble it. Aluminium has quite a high scrap value, which means it might 'disappear' if anyone unscrupulous gets wind that it's there. I made this mistake many years ago, thinking; well, nobody would steal a greenhouse, the glass would be impossible for them to shift discreetly for a start. Result; 120 panes of glass and nowhere to put it.

Steff, if you're buying yours new shop around, there are loads of good suppliers. Look in GYO, where many of them advertise. If you buy mail-order you can often get a bargain, larger or better quality than the big DIY chain-stores for roughly the same price. Also, don't forget that many suppliers just give a price for the basics then charge extra for the base, window-vents etc, whilst others quote for the whole thing. So read the small print first, it might turn out that the cheapest turns out to be far more expensive than you think. Aluminium frame quality varies too, so it might be worth researching a few different brands before committing yourself, after all you don't want one that twists out of shape in the first gale. I can recommend 'The Greenhouse People', but there are many others.

"how much did those lovely greenhouses cost you ?"

    From memory I paid £200 for the 12' x 8' and £400 for the 30' x 10'.

I waited quite a long time, as I recollect it, before something suitable came up. They were both about 90 minute drives away - which is probably not on for a small greenhouse that you would only be paying, say, £50 - £100 for.

Perhaps there are more "buyers" using eBay these days??

When you've finished with the assembly instructions, can you pass them on please?
I've got mine, still in pieces in the back garden. Got the slabs and sand ready for the base, and although we did mark with marker pen which bit was which, I haven't a clue where to start!! I'd really love to have it up and operational before the winter sets in

I will be happy to send you the instructions when I have finished building it. We spent most of the day putting the rubber seals on!! Started to fit the glass only to learn the man who laid the base laid it wonky!! I can scan them and mail them to you if you'd like?

Doesn't matter whether you have the destructions or not Maureen............you'll still be left with a handful of nuts and bolts wondering "Where the heck does this lot go?" I sometimes think the flatpack people do it on purpose just to Pee you off!
