The brother of someone I work with has an old greenhouse in his back garden that he's said I can have for nowt. Don't have any other details at the mo, so I know nothing about size, condition etc. but I'm quietly excited and keeping my fingers crossed.

I'd really like a g/h on my lottie, but I know I'll lose a bit of space. I have a feeling my poor Da is going to do his nut, as he's not keen on gardening at all, and is the one who bears the brunt of most of my mad DIY ideas!! I'm going to try and persuade him to come and have a look with me when I can arrange to go and have a nose.

Anything I need to think about, such as things that might turn into big problems or owt???

I'll let you know how I get on!

not really Sarah, if it's free you can spend a few quid on glass and still be in pocket.

I assume it;s an Aluminium one so rot won't be a problem, the only thing is a good base, personally I'd go for brick ( or brieze block) the you can raise it up a bit and give you a buit more head room.

Whatever size , it won't be big enough once you get going

If you have to take it down to move it take lots of pics of what goes where and mark all the panes of glass so you know where they came from .Get a good pair of leather rigger gloves so you dont cut your hands and wrists in bits.Take your time and dont rush .Im sure more advice will follow as someone on here moved one recently .Think it was Mrs Dobby.

Hi Sarah! Congrats on the free greenhouse, free things are always the best!!!

Beefy is right, we got a free 10' by 8' greenhouse (and moved and errected it ourselves) not so long back (Octoberish time), it wasnt majorly difficult (tho getting it into / onto Mr D's Fiat Panda was fun!), but I would advise some good gloves, a couple of permanent marker pens, lots of screwdrivers, pliers and spanners and some WD40 or equivalent for dismantling, plus treat yourself to a load of new nuts / bolts / z-clips and w-clips, as using new ones will make life a lot easier! You can get them quite cheaply online, and also take a look on ebay, some places on there do them very cheaply indeed!

Oh, and give it a really good clean before you put it back together, including the glass, it is a long job, but much easier whilst dismanteled!

Spent a good part of last year looking for a free or cheep greenhouse and failed. So my new expensive treat to myself should be arriving from the manufacturers sometime in Feb and I cannot wait..

Nice one Seasprout, hope it arrives soon and is everything you wanted it to be! We'd have loved to buy a new one, but finances just arent up to it, not even for one of the cheaper poly glazed ones! (One of our plot neighbours lost 2 of them in the gales the other week, they werent happy at all having paid a lot for them too!)

Thanks for all the replies, guys!!! Mrs D, your GH story had me laughing a lot. I'm just picturing the trouble we might have getting everything in either mine ir my Da's car, too. Could be amusing!

I'm still desperately trying to think of where on earth I'm going to put it, as I do only have a sort of half-plot, and it's a bit slopey in most places. This could take a while!!!

Well, will update you all on how things go when I've had chance to go and have a look, and I'll try to take a couple pics too.

Well, I've been round and had a look at the GH, and to be honest, it is waaaaay past my ability to be able to do anything useful with it. I don't even know if it would be possible to get it out from where it is. It's in such a state, with ivy and trees growing on, in, through and around it. The bit of garden that the GH is in needs a totally thorogh cutting back, which the guy whose house it is has no interest in doing and I don't want to do all that work only to find out that either the GH is past repair, ir that it won't fit on the bit of ground where it would need to go.

Pity, but I think maybe it will work out for the best in the end!
