Hi there,

Got greenhouse built finally,

Im completely new to gardening - never done any before, and i think ive managed to kill my first tomato plant


I left them in my greenhouse for 2 days before moving them to the growbags, ive been watering them every night, the grow bag has been getting about 1 can (7-9litres) - im not using feed just yet.....



Any help is appreciated,

I take it evening is best time to water?

Also, should i be maybe adding some old bottles or similar and filling with diluted feed?

Have you been leaving the greenhouse door open during the day? It's maybe getting too hot for them. Looks like heat exhaustion to me.

Where were they before you moved them to the greenhouse; and are those pots with the bottoms cut out? did you have to muck about with taking them out of the pots too much?

I'd definitely give them a huge watering, as they do look wilted - but is it from being too hot when they were used to the cold maybe?

thanks for the replies.

I bought them from a garden centre - so they were outside under cover.......

i looked at my thermometer this afternoon / early evening and it was showing 28 degree's - it's now 11degree's (10pm):

a) is this too hot
b) should i be leaving door open during the day?
c) Ive asked this before, but what is the ideal temp? ( i have tomatos, peppers and chill's
d) Feed - When? How? Someone suggested in a rpevopus post of mine i cut out some old bottles, place a couple between each plant and feed the bottom of the bag with diluted tomato feed.

oh, yea, the bottoms are cutout from the pots - and ive just given each bag a watering can full.

Mailme, the ideal temp is 18 - 22 degrees in the daytime. They will all stand much less at night. Anything abobv 25 degrees is liable to be stressful so open windows, soak the floor apply shading if daytime temps are higher than this.
Hard to say what's wrong with your toms but they look either dried out or far too hot.
Hope you can sort them.

Mine were the same next day after being moved to polytunnel, I did not realize how hot it gets inside during the day and did not open the door. I've then left the door open, watered plants, soaked the floor and they have recovered nicely (only to get killed later by strong wind, which took my polytunnel apart).

Fortunately tomatoes ususually recover from wilting once they are watered.

In severe cases though 'permanent wilting point' may be reached which means the roots have dried out to such an extent they are not able to re-hydrate!

Well, they got a good watering last night, and i now know to keep the door open during the day.

Problem is/was - i work during day, so was just coming home at night and seeing the "damage".

As for feeding - when and how do you feed your plants with tomato feed?

You can do it every day I think? If not then give them a standard feeding upon next watering (either pour onto soil or mix in watering can, depending on the feed).
I'm not sure about every day but doing it straight away will help them so I would if I were you.

My problem may have got worse!

My other plants are looking "diseased" - is this maybe them beggining to wilt because of my afore mentioned problems? (that should now not be an issue?)

Once the first blossom starts to form on the tomato plants i feed them once a week with a liquid tomato feed. You will find the red bottle in any garden or DIY store. Read the directions and it will tell you how many capfuls to add to the watering can or bucket you are using. Hope all will be ok for you. Plants don't just need heat they need air to circulate to keep plants healthy so don't be afraid to leave the door open in the daytime.

Looks like you have gotten water on the pepper leaves, this has then caused them to scorch with the sunlight. Plants will be fine.

Its on 4 of my plants

Hopefully its just water on them, although i haven't watered during the day!

That really looks just like water splash. The sun then gets on the leaves and the water acts like a lens and burns the leaf. It doesn't seriously damage the plant - it's more cosmetic. They'll be ok.
