| Hi All Had to tell someone (people I work with think Ive lost the plot !!) that my plastic greenhouse is now up and looking good. To keep it safe the love of my life has drilled down into the concrete, through the poles and bolted it to the ground. Seems very stable so heres hoping. Ive check ed the temperature over the weekend and it averages 5 degrees in daytime which I think is OK but if not please let me know. I have a heater too if its too cold. Ive also got some staging in here and its really sweet and home from home (OH calls it my wendy house )To start with Im going to plant some early carrots and salad mix in small tubs to see how they go. Any further advice gladly welcomed. I intend to use the G house for toms, cucumbers and melons over summer. Sam |

How many hours today have you just stood in it Well I am hoping to have mine finished by the end of the weekend but will see how the weather is as I have been mad already tonight after work, out in the rain and working in artificial light.. I hope it is worth it Alan |

| Mine arrived from the suppliers last friday, spent all day sunday bending over bolting it together. Now am in agony when i walk and i have only got the gable ends and sides made up. Am I right in thinking i cannot cut toughened glass.? Has it got to be cut by a specialist..? If so I cannot fit my extra roof vent.! I am working all weekend so cannot work on it. Should I throw a sickie on a sunny day next week.?? Last edited by seasprout; 20-02-2007 at 08:44 PM. Reason: Felt like it. |

| You are right, talk to your local glass shop.

| Am very new to gardening and this forum. The house I recently bought has an old greenhouse, the glass has been replaced by corregated plastic but all the panes of glass seem to be in the shed. Why would the people before me replaced the glass with plastic (should it be put back as I am sure it would look better) and I was thinking of making some protective cloche (s)for my raised beds - should I use the spare glass or plastic? thanks

| Hi SS, Rather than cut a sheet of toughened Glass why don't you ask for two normal sheets of greenhouse glass for where vent goes then you've got a sheet of glass just in case

| Hi Supersam, great to hear you're getting on so well. Your salad leaf and carrots will get on fine - mine are well away. Have you bought some fleece for covering seedlings at night ? You could put a couple of buckets of potatoes in there in the hope of some really early ones. I planted mine in January and they're up. Keep us posted.

| Congrats on the new arrival Sam, what kind of plastic is it,is it the soft sheeting type or rigid plastic/polycarbonate type? If it's the soft type watch it in the sun as it tends to dry out & rip (well it does on my mini zip up one anyway).Wish I had a walk-in greenhouse, I really envy you getting your plants off to a good start in there.

I know where there are two sheets of Horti glass at work. In the mean time I could phone the manufacturers and thank them for sending and charging me for stuff i cannot use unless i pay to have it altered. <cynicsmiley> |

| Thanks again for advice Alice mentioned putting fleece over my babies at night but never having used it Im a bit unsure. Does it have to be a special fleece or would bubblewrap do the job? By the way I found 2 peas sprouting in the indoor prop already, they've only been in since Monday !! Thanks Sam |

| Hi Sam, if your greenhouse is frost free at night you shouldn't need fleece as you've only got hardy-ish plants in there (carrots/salads) & they should be O.K. Your tender ones are in a prop. aren't they so they will be warm enough. Blueberries are hardy & can be left outside anyway so that's no problem either. I wouldn't put bubble wrap directly on top of anything as it will make them sweat, if you find you need anything if it goes very icy use horticultural fleece, newspaper or old net curtains!
