On last Weeks gardeners question time BBC Radio 4 Bob Flowerdew mentioned that Tomatoes prefered glass greenhouses while Cucumbers prefered plastic greenhouses. He did not give any reason. Anyone have any ideas why?

I agree, it's more than likely something to do with light transmission. One of the older chaps on our allotment site always grows his cukes in an old greenhouse frame covered with shade netting instead of glass/plastic and gets great crops.

I used to grow both in a glass greenhouse and now grow both in a plastic polytunnel. They do fine in both.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Reply to Heated mat for Tom's and chilliesby raryI use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
