  • Cucumber Clues

I have been growing vegetables for around 3 years, and I have decided to start growing cucumbers properly in a greenhouse (8x6)
Has anyone got any tips on how I can make this work? I will be using F1 varieties this season, Passandra and Sindy

Will you be growing in the boarder or in containers?

I grow successfully in growbags/ring culture pots on my bench, but did really well with them in border soil in the poly last season. Think I will repeat the exercise and use the greenhouse for toms/peppers in 2013.

Cucumbers do better in greenhouse or poly tunnel, my parents grew them year after year in Ukraine in greenhouse to start with and then later open it up, but the summer is a lot hotter there.

Also they do not like their roots to be disturbed, when you start cucumbers in containers no matter how careful you are transplanting them they will always will feel bad after it, so would suggest sow direct into ground or use paper pots which you do not remove when transplanting into ground.

Hartley-botanic website suggests sowing now January for late march crop. Might try it myself.

I transplant with no issues at all. All of mine get sown into 3" square pots, then planted once frost risk has passed. I have sown all curcurbits this way for a number of years.

Maybe different varieties respond differently, we grew small cucumbers what you call here gherkin or pickling.

I grow both gherkin and cucumber. Sowing seed early in a greenhouse is not really an option here in the UK unless you sow late or heat your hut!

Likewise but my final potting is in to a bottomless 2ltre pot on top of a 5 litre pot. Since I started doing that I've had no problems with cucumber wilt and no stem rot either
