    coldframe freebie, any suggestions??



    My friend bought a house and this was in the garden, I know its sad but i've put a before and after cos i'm quite chuffed i've fixed it ... I was thinking while i was cleaning and fixing it about putting my herbs in it over the winter cos its right near my back door, but they are too tall!!

    Any suggestions for using it over the winter? thanks all

    Build it up to clear your herbs on bricks or breeze blocks. No need to cement them together.

        You could grow mixed salad leaves and winter lettuce in there too.

          ty VC I was frozen and soaked doing it but i'm chuffed, i might give that a go in one half, cos i have it straight onto concrete would i need to sit the trays on something for warmth? or will it be warm enough in there?

            I wouldn't worry about the concrete. In theory, it would warm up during the day and act as a heat store (that's my theory anyway!)

                If you can fix it to the breeze blocks that way there is no risk of it taking off and devise some sort of clips for the top. The wind doesn't just blow it sucks as well. Never doubt the power of the wind!

                  Thanks Roitelet, we have a major wind problem thru our garden to, it killed my polytunnel last winter so I will try and either weight it down or fix it to the floor maybe, didnt think about it being lighter than my greenhouse lol

                    ^^^^^wot she said. Yups, a system to keep the lids fixed in position is an essential. If the wind gets underneath the lid, even if it doesn't move the frame, it can shatter the glass when the lid drops down again. With the cost of horticultural glass as it is, it can become a real expensive business.
