  • Ants in my polytunnel.

I was weeding on Sunday, I pulled up a weed with fairly deep roots and a swarm of ants appeared. I covered the little hole in with compost and carried on weeding elsewhere.

Will they do any damage? Should I try digging them out?

They might...depends what you have growing there.

You could try watering them out?
They like it dry so change that and they might move on.

They don't like ground cinnamon either.

I'll be down watering in the morning and I'll pour a lot on that particular area. If that doesn't work I'll put a bit of cinnamon around it.

I'll probably be digging the whole thing out anyway because the entire polytunnel is a mess with stringy yellow/orange roots.

Were they red or black ants? I find black ants succumb to nippon liquid ant killer but red ants seem immune.

I have had problems if the ants build their nest directly under my tomato plants but then (as muddled said) once the plants are watered regularly the ants go away.

Another problem with ants is that they encourage aphids (discourage aphid killers) so you need to be on the lookout for that.

I don't know how to put the link here but there is another thread currently about ants, look for 'ants friend or foe'
There might be some info there..
