  • Wilkinsons 10p sale

Yep its that time of year when wilkinsons start to reduce their garden stock to 10p. Yeasterday i managed to get watering can roses, wooden plant labels, all different types of plastic ties for 10p each. And i also managed to get a packet of home defences ant bait stations for 25p (should have been £3.98 ).

Im not sure if this is nation wide yet - but i thought i would give you all a heads up

Thanks for that Matt, keep up the good work.

    Cheers, Tony.

      Oh good!
I'll suggest my mom pops into her local one and make up a mystery package collection for my Crimble Pressie!
She'll be thrilled to get my pressie sorted!!!!

Noooooo. My official Wilkinson shopper (my mum) is away at the moment.

Sounds like a perfect pressie Nicos. One year my folks and the in-laws both made up a food goodies and kit hamper for me. Neither of them knew the other was doing it and there were no duplicates!!

Don't get too excited - my local had cleared their shelves but no mark downs at all.

          Stand at ease!

yep, i noticed there weren't many mark downs either (not fertilisers etc yet) - compared to last year anyway. I popped in today again but they had sold out of all the mark down priced garden stuff - i just hope they will put some more out (fingers crossed)

Well today I bought 17 bare rooted roses from Aldi for £1.70 (10p each!). They were at Aldi at £2.99 for weeks and I went to buy two this morning and they came up as 10p at the tills, so I went and got 15 more(the sign still said £2.99, but they'd be reduced and it hadn't been changed). I was tempted to buy 30 at £3, but settled for 17 at £1.70.
The woman at the checkout was trying not to laugh when I put so many on the conveyor and a few people looked at me funny. They would have come to £50.83 at the full price. I think they were surprised when they came in at less than two quid for the lot.
A few have shoots on and are growing in the bags, all look healthy enough. I've looked them up on the internet and they all seem to be relatively disease-resistant, patent-free and decent varieties (if uncommon). Aldi seem to get stuck with some plants, eventually they reduce some but not by much usually. I suppose they didn't advertise the fact that they were 10p because they don't want people waiting until plants are reduced in future, so I think I got lucky there.

Hopefully they'll do nicely. I'm going to train some up the wall of the house, a few up a shed, grow some to flower besides a low wall and grow the rest as shrubs. The rugosas can go in the hedge and grow as shrubs.

              Bare root roses

I realised when I got them home that I'd selected quite a lot of orange ones. These are hybrid tea roses, I'm going to train them as shrubs, and maybe the odd one as a standard.

Left - a floribunda rose. I'll train it as a shrub. Right - climbing roses, I've never been as interested in them (they can look twiggy if not grown right) but they should turn out nice.

"Hedging rose" - Rosa rugosa. They can make shrubs or climb.

Rugosas are beautiful, scented and heavily hipped. Look lovely - well done!

You do know that those roses might not be the same as actually on the packet?

                  Just warning you!

What makes you say that? They should have been grown in rows and bagged according to type just fine, I've had no problems with Aldi plants before.
One of the rugosas was open, but they're easy to tell apart from the others and it could only be a rubra or an alba. The ones that are growing in the bags a bit seem to display the habits of the variety. Have you had bare root plants turn out to be something unexpected? I'm not too bothered if they're a bit different anyway, I kind of just bought a selection of most of them and whatever colours appealed to me, they're my first roses and I'm not too bothered particular about varieties. There was a lot of orange ones left (maybe people aren't as keen on orange roses? ), luckily I like them and bought many.
