  • Watering dried out compost.

If you have just found a bag of dried out compost that you want to use for planting / sowing and you find it just won't absorb water easily, try adding one scant drop of washing up liquid to the water first. It changes the surface tension of the water droplets, making it easier for the compost to absorb.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Clever clogs...Now why did I never think of that.

How many times have I been ready to repot etc only to have wait for ages for the dried compost to loosen up.

I have a plastic potting tray (from QD) and I spread my dried compost in it and add warm water. Keep mixing until it is evenly damp.

It's the same principle as making cement.

That's an idea, Enrich - maybe one could use a saponaria (soapwort) instead of Fairy Liquid? Maybe it produces a surfactant.
