  • Uses for old CDs in the Garden?

Sorry if this has already been covered in another thread, but I wondered if any grapes knew of good uses for old CDs. I have lots from work, and am about to throw them out, but keep thinking there must be some good way of recycling them. I know some folk use them as bird scarers, but not sure how effective they are for this? Any other ideas gratefully received

oh yes! tie them on pieces of string (or something similar) to additional canes above your crops and its supposed to keep the birds off1
I did this the other day, OH came for a look around and went, "oh, so I wont be watching that film then?!" Ooops!
Also, try tying pieces of old video tapes to the poles, they make a noise and are also supposed to be a bird deterrent.

Worth a try, but the only foolproof way against birds is netting. Then again, some of the birds are gardeners' friends. OK, pigeons eat cabbages, but blue tits eat aphids, blackbirds and starlings eat wireworms and chafer grubs, and who can resist the robin who sits waiting for you to turn up beasties?

The wind here just makes them tangle! I have good success with bottles on the top of canes, the noise is just enough to keep the birds away from the actual veg beds but not the rest of the garden.

I hand some old CDs (actually those freebies that you get in supermarkets for AOL or some other ISPs) in the fruit cage before I netted it completely, seemed to do the job but nothing scientific for proof - the netting works a treat tho, mucho fruito at the moment.
