  • Nuts!!

    Hi
Does anyone have a suggestion on recycling nutshells?
I wondered whether they might deter slugs.
Any other ideas will be considered1
    Thanks

Thats a hard one ( as eve said when she first met adam) If you have enough you could use them in your paths but I guess you won;t have that many. I would think they act likebark chippings and whilst they will break down eventually, they will deplete the Nitrogen from the soil for a start and may cause more troubles than they solve. I'd add them to the compost heap I think.

If you have them in industrila quantities try them as a mulch, like cocoa shells.

              Hi
Being in Kent we get lots of cobnuts at the farmer's market so end up with a lot of nutshells, I've been using them as mulch, last year's seem to have disappeared already. If I'm not processing large quantities to dry in the dehydrator then they go on the compost heap.
I also found out due to my own laziness that if you leave the shells and the soft top bits in a plastic bag for long enough they soften up very nicely...

I also have cobnut trees. However i never seem to get the fruit as the local squirrel gets there first. He sits in the tree and drops the shells in my veg plot. They do seem to dissapear very quickly. So i just leave them on the ground and rotivate them in to the soil at a later time. Adding to the compost seems a good idea.

If you can grind them fine enough you can use them in soap to clean your hands or with say walnuts in a cleanser to exfoliat. They do need to be incredibly fine though.
