  • Hazel Bean Poles Help

Not sure which thread this cry for help should be on but as its veggie related have put it on this one.

Does anyone know where I can get Hazel Bean Poles? I mean the lovely ones that Monty Don et all use on the tv.

I have found various web sites that all say how enviromentally friendly they are vis a vis airmiles & Chinese Sticks but they dont say where to buy them.

I live in leicestershire & dont have a very big car but would be willing to pay postage. Also I dont have Monty Dons budget so an idea of cost would be handy before I commit myself to a second mortgage for bean poles.

Otherwise, plant some hazels and coppice them.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

Hello, I grow and sell hazel poles for use as runner bean supports.

I am based in leicestershire - see website www.swepstonecoppice.co.uk for details.

Prices are 40p per 8 foot pole.

              Hi Alanh,

there's no mention of delivery charges on the site - do you deliver, and if so is there a maximum distance / charge?

              thanks

I want to know exactly the same thing as Geordievik, I've invested in canes (stupidly, air miles etc) and it's pointless to waste them now but will def need pea sticks next year.
                best wishes

Dear Sue, GeordieVik and the world,

Thankyou very much for your interest.

You have both put your finger on a dilemma that I face. Much as it pains me to turn away business, it is probable that the carbon dioxide emitted in transporting items such as these over long distances nullifies the environmental benefit in growing them in the first place.

I do deliver bean-poles and pea-sticks: as many people cannot transport them easily themselves. But I try to stick to a 25-mile radius of where I live. For up to 12 miles I would charge £5 for delivery; for up to 25 miles I would charge £10.

Parcelforce charge a minimum of £14.25 for postage up to a weight of 10Kg. With unseasoned wood you may well end up paying a fortune for essentially transporting water around the country.

Might I suggest that you contact your local Wildlife Trust or Country Council. Often they will have volunteers who cut coppice for them and then they sell it on to the public.

If anyone is still interested for next year, then by all means contact me via the web-site, sometime over the winter, and we can discuss the details.

                  Best Regards, Alanh.

Oh, what a pity, but do understand, will search out a local supplier, but it would have been so nice to buy something from a fellow grape - I'm in Kent so def not within your delivery radius.
