Ok, this is a real cheapskate way of adding to the garden, but when some nice friend/man gives you some flowers you can take cuttings and grow them forever (aww). Look for nonflowering side shoots when you're trimming the stems, snap or cut them off and dip in rooting hormone and put in water or sand/compost mix, soon you should have new plants. I find carnations work best for this, I'll also be keeping the berries from my xmas displays and trying to sow the seeds.

I always take my secateurs to open gardens. I have several Cuttings from Bressingham Gardens in Norfolk.

This works especially well with carnations... (although I killed all my attempts when we moved house 2 years ago - Mr Shortie... is it that long ago you last bought me flowers?

When you get a side shoot (pref an inch or so) between the leaves and stem, tear it off at the base and I put them in water for a week or so. You should see roots appearing at which point I pot them up.

Ha ha.... had to laugh at 'Mr Shortie'... he's anything but short!

Well Benacre, if everyone did what you do there would be no gardens left. Its the likes of you who get other gardeners a bad name.
Act a little more mature in future and buy your own plants like the rest of us.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I've never taken cuttings from gardens but I have been known to help myself to the odd seedhead. Thats not too bad is it?
