Tesco Extra are the bigger stores, I think, and even they don't all have a gardening section, so worth a phone call first perhaps?

They also had 8 metre X 2 metre black weed suppression sheet for a quid!

I bet that's the stuff that I bought about 3wks ago for �2 per pack.

Hi DDL

Not got a lottie but have built 4 raised beds in the side garden 2 @ 10ft x 5ft and the other 2 @ 7ft x 5ft and also dug out part of the flower border to put in a row of 6 fruit bushes from Aldi. Trying the square foot gardening system in the beds to see how it goes? Did some growing in pots last year potatoes and tomatoes and also cherry toms in hanging baskets, have hated eating shop toms all winter!

Got my seeds growing in my 4 tier mini greenhouse and can't wait to get these in. Have planted onions, shallots and garlic already.

Will Iget a lottie in the future, don't know, if this works i will be able to get another 3 or four beds in if I want to so only time will tell.

may take some pictures in the future but it seems small fry compared to what the others have done.

Hello Nick Nack, I don't think its small fry at all. I think you're doing great. We don't all have lotties, some of us grow in our own gardens. I'm growing in raised beds, some square foot gardening and containers - and the greenhouse. I don't grow for big crops for storing or freezing. I'm more interested in trying to get a bit of fresh something all the year round. And thanks for the Tesco info. Must check what they have.

Hi Nick Nack - a grower after my own heart! We bought the house partly because of its long garden - all down to grass. After 7 years the first third is patio and seating area surrounded by hardy perennials, the second third is my husband's prized wild flower meadow - he's the plant recorder for our area for the Botanial Society of the British Isles (cor, eh?) and a summer house, and the bottom third is what I grandly call my potager - a wooden edged area with paths made of chipped bark, a cold frame and a greenhouse. I think I'm locally known as the grass murderer! We have no pretentions to being self sufficient - so much 'ordinary' veg is so cheap and takes so much room, but I love to grow things I can't easily buy or can't buy the freshness and quality I like.
You'll get loads of encouragement and advice here - I'm fairly new myself but I love this site and the friendly and helpful people here.

Thanks for the encouragement Alice and Flummery. Hopefully everything will be a success, only time will tell. I am already starting to worry about when I go on holiday? Will somebody steal what I have grown? It's like being the parent of a new baby again?
