  • Cheap way of laying paving stones

I have taken all of the shale which the last owners had put on our front garden as it was a mess (I think it was a quick fix to make the garden look tidier when they came to sell it).

I am now left with an area which is about 15' x 15' of quite hard soil but I don't want to grow anything there.

We will probably use it to park a small car on when my daughter gets older (she is only 11 but it will I am sure the time will fly by to when she will be learning to drive and want her own car).

Anyway, I have put some containers with various plants under the window and by the front door to make it look less bare.

I have found a local paving stone/fence seller who has some Hexagonal paving stones for sale (raven pattern) for just over £1.00 each.

I was thinking of making a kind of path from the gate (well where the gate should be as we don't have any on the drive ) towards the front door.

Do I have to buy some sand to put under these and if I decide to put some coloured gravel inbetween the stepping stones do I need to put something under this too?

If you are thinking about parking a car on them, they need to be sat on a bed of sand, then fixed in place with mortar as they will easily move.

Sorry, I meant we will probably use it to park a car on in about 6 years time.

If I intend doing that I don't want to grow anything in the garden, well, at least not in the centre.

So, I can just put stepping stones on that can be moved about and then get something down in a few years if we want to park there.
