  • Fenugreek

Earlier on this year (no idea of the actual date), I sowed some seeds from a pot from Tesco (sold for cooking, not growing) as an experiment. After a few weeks the ones that germinated grew and produced seed pods. I sowed some of the seeds and now have more seed pods. Two crops from a supermarket seed for cooking !

If anyone's interested, these two fenugreek are now over 2 feet tall and flowering again.

That's amazing! Did you grow them indoors or out? What sort of compost did you use? Can you post a pic of the plants or give us a description?

Grown indoors in Wickes cheapo compost. I'm afraid I can't do pics. Imagine a single stem with 3 leaves growing; 4 inches later, another 3 leaves. every so often, flowers appear and when pollinated, seed pods grow to about 3-4 inches. Each pod contains between 15 - 30 seeds.

I think - but please correct me if I'm wrong - that you can 'sprout' fenugreek seeds, which are then used as 'Methi' in Indian recipes.

I was planning to grow Fenugreek as a green manure and to eat so I read this thread over breakfast this morning. I then went to the supermarket at lunchtime and just happened to see a packet for cooking on the shelf so picked it up and will give it a go.
So, thanks for the inspiration Rocketron!

Did your plants overwinter, or have you just been re-sowing the newly grown seeds?

                  Cheers

I was just buying some seeds and read their description for Fenugreek, it said it could be used as a coffee substitute! No idea how, but sounds interesting and could give that a try if are getting loads of seeds.

Why didn't I think of trying the seeds? I found frozen fenugreek leaves in our local Tesco the other week!

Is it possible to be allergy towards fenugreek? It seems everytime I roast and then grind it up, my throat gets a pain like needles are sticking in it. Which is a shame because \i really like the smell and taste of it.

I didn't realise it was that long ago!

I chucked a few in the soil after soaking overnight, they germinated ok.

I didn't look after them and they were sown in an area where the local cats decided to go to the toilet, so the blighters scratched them up before they had any real chance of growing.

I must remember to try again this year, as I say they germinated fine from a pack of cooking seeds.

I sowed 5 seeds the other day and they are already an inch high. I think I should have sown more though now that I've read this post again.

I had a picture in my mind of it growing 'bushy' but from what I've read here each seed will only produce one stalk, is that right?
