Check the packaging, my daughter asked why I could not grow potatoes like TESCO and I found in very small print the variety and the grower printed on the bag. If they are F1 they may not grow true but saying that I have had great success growing F1's and still getting close to the original. Give it a go what have you got to loose?

Tomatoes to me seem a much easier gamble. They don't take up that much space (unlike squashes) and if they have crossed you might have less of a disappointment than with crossed squashes or chillies.http://mudandgluts.com - growing fruit and veg in suburbia

Reply to Heated mat for Tom's and chilliesby raryI use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
