  • Asian or Nashi Pears

Our Asian pear had its first and only fruit last summer. It was fabulous!

The tree has now made lots of growth and looks wonderfully healthy with about twenty little fruit in evidence this year. The only problem is that there is a 'leader' in the middle which is going straight up, and it is already getting quite tall.

How and when should I prune this tree? Will it grow to be very tall and unmanageable (esp for picking the fruit) if I just leave it alone? Should I shorten the leader to encourage more branching lower down or will this just give the main shoot more vigour?

    Any advice would be welcome.

I also wonder if anyone knows how to propagate more? Will it grow from cuttings? Can it be grafted on to something fairly common like a quince or common apple rootstock?

Asian pears can be grafted on seedling pear and Pyrodwarf rootstocks.
