  • Pears rotting on the tree!

    Hi all,

I've just been out for a quick inspection of all that's edible in the garden and noticed some of my pears (concord) in a verry sorry state (see pictures), it looks like they are rotting from the stalk down (on the tree), I have no idea what is going on or what may be causing it.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Graham.

The rotting bacteria have gained access to the pear through the visible damage caused by wasps.

Looks like wasps have had a nibble, or maybe birds. Wasps have been at my plums - especially as the wet weather has caused some plums to split as a result of them swelling too quickly after a long dry spell.

I must admit that my pears (Conference, Concorde and Williams) are all in good condition, but as they're in poor soil and only on moderate-vigour Quince roots, I water them once every week or two during dry spells to prevent water stress.

But I think that your problem is something nibbling at the fruits, which are then rotting.
