I have parsnip seeds in half toilet roll tubes. They have grown well and now have spindly seedlings. My question is when should I put them in the ground and how deep?

You can plant them out now. One method is to make a deep hole with a metal spike, place some sand in the bottom and then the loo roll with seedling on top of the sand and then back fill with more sand. The top of the loo roll can be at the same level as the soil. Water regularly.Last edited by Capsid; 26-03-2010, 05:05 PM.

If they're in half toilet roll tubes you might find that the root has outgrown the tube if you have seedlings already. Have a lookie underneath - if the root is coming out you might get forking - not the end of the world if you do but they're a pain to prep.Last edited by Shadylane; 26-03-2010, 06:01 PM.

Reply to Heated mat for Tom's and chilliesby raryI use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
