Mine is beginnig to swell nicely at the base, but is green. do I have to cover it or will it go white as it gets bigger?
Haven;t ever grown it before. We have loads of herb fennel. It grows wild here as we are so near the sea

No, just leave it, it'll get white.

When did you guys plant yours? I know I'm further north, and I was a bit late in planting (only got my raised bed built in May so sowed some seeds straight away) - but I have no sign of swelling yet.

I have faith - just curious to compare notes.

Don't be to hasty with fennel as it has a tendency to run to seed this time of the year. The late planting is often far more successful.
