  • Canes for Tomatoes - Original or What??

Was going to buy some more Canes to stake my remaining Tomato plants about a fortnight ago - until my wife came up with a "bright idea".
As we have a bamboo plant, she suggested that I use some of these for stakes, as canes are the "dried out" variety.
To be perfectly honest they were so dense you wouldn't even miss the ones I cut away.
So I now have about twenty tomato plants supported by green canes!!

We use our home grown canes too. We have a pampas grass and black bamboo.

I have raked the soil and planted the seeds

I was told the other day by an assistant in the Wyvale Garden centre that bamboo canes are in short supply so sounds like a good plan. Unfortunately my patch of bamboo spreads sideways well but doesn't seem to grow upwards

Perhaps you planted them sideways instead of upwards??
