  • Boltardy Beetroot

I planted some out about a month ago and there's no sign of them germinating!

I planted them into a raised bed and temperatures have been reasonable down here in Devon since, however there's no sign at all of my beetroot.

Should I have seen something by now or is it often slow to emerge?

I sowed mine in modules on April 12th and have kept them in a cold greenhouse, they germinated a few days ago. They may be a little slower outside even in a raised bed. I'd give it a bit longer.

There's a recent thread around somewhere about the problems in germinating beetroot and whether to soak the seeds first - maybe that could help?

Did you take the soil temperature when you sowed? I suspect it was too cold. They should have germinated in about 10 days to 2 weeks. Mine take about 6 days after being soaked.

If you have enough seeds I would re-sow now. You could always sow into modules - that will give any of your original survivors a little longer just in case they have heard your pleas!

Thanks, I'll re-sow in modules this weekend. Will the original seeds just be dormant or is it likely they have rotted?
