Grow Your Own Magazine

Just sown my cylindra beetroot and was thinking that I grow these because they are easy to slice for pickling rather than the round varieties which can be difficult to push through the neck of a jar and take longer to cook.
I wish someone had advised me to either buy a large, wide pan or pick them fairly young as they can be rather difficult to jam down into a pan under the water level.

I like fresh beetroot so I'm growing a mini veg variety - Moulin Rouge - to get some baby beets for salad.

I'm growing the same as last year - boltardy. It converted me to beetroot - before that I wouldnt touch the stuff! Going to give the leaves a try this year for the first time.

You can buy a small variety, or you can sow the seeds a bit closer together...= smaller beets.

I module sow them, one or two seed clusters per module and then plant the modules out 6" apart. I harvest them the size of golf balls and as you harvest them, more are there ready to grow on. Also, no thining out required.
