  • What to do with Turnips

    Hi Peeps
So help me out here guy's. Turnips, an easy crop to grow(most of the time) give or take the odd pest. How do you eat yours. The obvious one is to chuck them into stews, but there must be some more interesting ways to eat these little beauties.
    Regards
    Dave

They're lovely served in a white wine sauce. Honest.

Thanks everyone. That's given me some ideas. White wine sauce though, i would never have thought of that one, thanks Alice. Has anyone roasted them with the chicken yet.

I think I roasted them one time - they don't take as long as carrots or spuds though. Cut them into big chunks or you won't have much left to serve up.

I've roasted them in olive oil with other chopped up chunky veg, sprinkled with salt, chilli and broken chunks of Feta cheese.
I wonder what Baldrick did with his??

My favourite way to eat turnips is to slice them thickly and boil with carrots (halved lengthways) and then drain and place on a greased baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, salt and freshly ground pepper. Add either a tsp of honey or sugar and stick in a hot oven. YUM YUM

Yum. Well that's given me some good ideas. I'll look forward to trying these out over the next few months. Incidently, i grew some of the T&M Turnip Oasis, which they say tastes like a melon. Well to my taste bud's they don't.
Although they grew to be a nice uniform white turnip, they taste like any other to me.
Thanks again for your cooking ideas everyone

                          Storing turnips in a glut!

Lovely ideas for ways of cooking and eating but how do you store them- I have read to store them in moist sand but having tried this and checked them after a month find the sand has dried out and turnips are going off - any ideas on how to store if you have a glut.

I find chopping them up and bagging them to go into the freezer is the best way as then i can have lots and lots of winter vegetables! Yey!

I don't think turnips store very well, apart from freezing, but if anyone else has a good and proven idea, i would also like to know how. I found some little white maggots in the top and sides of my turnips today. Not impressed .
I have saved some though. Just enough time to plant some more for the winter stew pot me thinks
