  • What's up with Lily???

Just let the gals out- and noticed Lily is walking round with her head tipped to the side

Sort of as if she is looking carefully at something on the floor- she's twisted her head around- so it doesn't look like she's pulled a muscle ( might of had a 'to do' with the cockerel ...but sort of doubt that...)
She's running round a bit- and tucked into her breakfast- neck straight but tips her head again when she stops. Then sort of closes her eyes.
She was a bit like that last night when I put her too bed- and I just thought she'd probably pulled a muscle.

I'm off out now until this afternoon- but just wondered if you can spare her ( and me) a few minutes thought incase it rings any bells as to what is wrong with her.

It's just happened suddenly yesterday. My thoughts are possible pulled muscle or a stroke.
She looks healthy in every other way just this tipped head- think it's always the same way- will need to check ( ?blind suddenly in one eye...both look healthy.)
Will go and investigate further when I get back.

In my 11 months of chook keeping- she's the first adult to have any probs! ( she's 19 weeks old)

    Any idea please peeps???

Could be an ear/sinus infection beginning? See if she gets a snotty nose or looks unbalanced at all. Sounds as if she might have earache or something? One of my Warrens woke u with a swollen face on one side the other week and that was a sinus infection. A couple of the others were sneezing a little bit at same time. All ok now - few days antibiotics and Respite.

Sue do you get antibiotics from your vet as and when required, or do you keep some in a medical kit?

        Sorry for the hijack Nicos

Well I've had a closer look- her head is always tipped to the same side- but can straighten it when feeding.
She's shaking her head quite a bit- which looks like a possible ear infection starting doesn't it?
When I went to catch her she legged it- and her co-ordination is spot on weaving through some fencing and over a rockery!!!

Eyes and ears look normal- maybe there will be some discharge/swelling in a couple of days??

I wonder what the vets over here will say if I want antibiotics for a chook
Better give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say!

Gapeworm??....don't think so- there's no real signs of it apart from the head shaking- but will certainly keep an eye open in case it's early signs.
The gals were wormed 5 months ago- and this one hasn't yet been done

My gut feeling is one of the others has grabbed her by the neck and pulled a muscle- all will either improve or deteriorate in the next couple of days!

          ...any other ideas peeps???

My vet is very understanding (and not an avian vet) and he gives me a decent amount of Baytril, on the understanding that if a bird doesn't improve I will take it in. I tend to use it only on the ex-batts as they can go down so fast and they're usually poorly on a Friday afternoon! I also had a problem with some birds I bought in and needed Tylan which my vet didn't have so he gave me a prescription after seeing the bird and I got it on the internet, so I now have the Tylan which is in powder form for diluting in water.

Sounds like ear or eye, would probably either go away or get more noticeable over the next day or two giving you more indication Nicos... Wait and see what comes out in the wash perhaps?

Hmmmm..tonight- when I got back in she was stumbling ..head just the same...I'm almost convinced it's an inner ear infection...no heat anywhere about her head.Tucked into her supper though!!!
Think I'll call in at the vets tomorrow ( better get the dictionary ready!!!)

Poor Lily. Very lucky with my vet as I also have Baytril in stock. Have just started one of my ex-batts on it as she is very swollen underneath with fluid. I fear it is probably a tumour but as she is eating well and keeping up with the others I don't want to take her to the vet without giving something a try. The last 2 girls that went to the vet had to be put to sleep.

Well I've just been Googling the generic name for Baytril...Enroflaxacin..so I'll phone tomorrow.
I'll take her in in nec- they're bound to laugh at 'The English Abroad' (.and charge appropriately!!)

Will ask for Baytril and Amoxicillin if they'll give it me....fingers crossed!

Hope she's ok. Lets hope the vet will give you the antibiotics. The dose is either 0.5ml twice a day or 0.4ml per kilo twice a day if you can weigh her! I've always had success with the 0.5ml dose. I just wrap them in a towel and pop it into their mouth - sorry beak! Try and get a small syringe (2.5ml) as well.
                        Good luck.

thanks for that- I'll go and weigh her now.

I've had a close look at her this morning- no discharge from nose or eyes- BUT the right side of her face is warmer than the left, although it's the same colour.
When I put her down she shook herself- head and body and strutted off back indoors.
So...can't be a stroke...and the heat indicates ear infection doesn't it????()

Will give the vets a ring once I've weighed her- hopefully I won't have to take her with me.

Poor little thing- it must really hurt

Fantastic!!!...they'll sell them to me without Lily having to go!!

                              I've weighed her- she's only 680g!!!!( @21 wks!)

Good thing is I've managed to book my cat in for his flu jab at the same time!

Out of interest- anyone know how long after a course of antibiotics you can eat the eggs?
She's not actually started laying yet- but there will be 3 of them starting laying tiddlers about the same time...that'll be fun working out which are hers!
