Lucky you! Great size for loads of chooks! Believe me a "couple" is never enough! It's the most addictive hobby so be prepared!

2-3 metres doesn't sound very wide?? but they will be happy as long as they have somewhere warm and somewhere to play, and food and water and cuddles have fun

You'll have to seperate the veg and chickens or there won't be any veg left for you!

How about a coop and enclosed run at the end of the garden that way they won't destroy all your plants. Please consider getting 3 as sadly one might die and one on it's own gets very lonely. Ex-batts are lovely and lay lots of eggs. If you get your name down now by the time you move and get their housing sorted you should get to the top of the waiting list.

you sound as though you have my garden! Ive managed to get 4 raised beds in and some soft fruit- 2 apple trees,4 chickens in an eglu and freerange area. Ive also got a small summerhouse and lots of nonveg planting. It used to have a lawn area but what with the chooks and veg -something had to give. Mine is also only a few metres wide-trick is to have a meandering path and 'rooms'-deffo makes it appear wider, more spacious.

2-3m is only 6-9 feet - are you sure you have your measurements right? Gardens are normally as wide as the house, so a minimum of about 12 feet (4m) I would have thought. Or are there borders/paths in addition to the space you describe?

Anyway, our garden is only about 20ft by 30ft (7m x 10m), and we have an eglu and three bantams in it (as well as two raised beds for veg and a small patio), so you definitely have space for chickens!

Sounds like the garden of the house I move into on Monday - I'm surrounded by boxes and am feeling a bit hysterical about getting it all done.

I've been thinking of chickens too but I know we have several urban foxes around (only moving about 300m to place with garden) so would worry about their security especially if let out during the day.

Splitting into rooms is certainly a good idea, will be doing that myself!

yes i think i may have my measurements wrong, the is a roughly half metre wide path that runs down the side of it, and i think the remaining width and taking the half metre is about 3 and a half metres i will measure for sure when we move in hopefully getting keys this week
