  • Sick chicken

I wonder if anyone has any ideas of what can be wrong with my chicken - she is probably about 18 months old - I had her from a friend just before the summer hols last year. She has been through a moult just prior to Christmas but despite being fully feathered and glossy feathered at that she is lifeless with a very small, dull comb.

She sits, hunched up on her own and is so painfully thin under all the feathers - you can feel her crop is empty and feel the breast bone. I have had her in the house a couple of times over night so I can keep an eye on her: she is eating a bit , drinking and pooing ok but she isn't right. I've kept chickens for years now and know when they go it is usually without reason and quite quickly - but this one is just hanging on in there. She really is in a state.

I have had rat bait down, this is inside a hole in small separately caged area, so she isn't able to get to it - non of the others have.

She's been like this for at least a month now - and despite warning my son that I think she is on her way out, she keeps on going - just!

    Any ideas?

what breed is she? has she been vaccinated, wormed etc. What do you feed her on?
In my experience, some of them just need a helping hand to pass on, there could be an internel tumour or anything. She sounds as though she is suffering, so its best to pts if you have tried everything else.

Poor thing, it's a long time to be like this. I'd either take her to the vets or do the deed. Definitely not broody? Think you need to make a decision here.

        Few questions -
        what breed is she?
When was she last wormed & what with? Has she any little visitors on her? Can she move around ok or is she propping up on a wing?

Little bird needs help one way or the other so if you can let us know we may be able to help.
