  • Non walking hen

A few weeks ago one of our hens started to limp quite a bit. She was still moving around ok and eating so we left it for a week to see if she got better. As she seemed to get worse and slow down on her eating we took her to the vets. Nothing could be found so we were given some painkillers and told to leave it another week and if she had not perked up to take her in again.

A week later we took her back again as she had decided that she was going to stop moving around completely and eat less. Again the vet could find nothing wrong with her apart from being underweight so as a last ditch attempt she gave us some antibiotics and told us that unless she started to eat we would need to say goodbye.

Right on cue she started to eat but now it is another week gone and she is not moving. We took her to the vets just to be sure again as the antibiotics seemed to do well and was given a course of them to be given orally. She now eats well when we put food and greens out for her but will not move for it. When she sits down she sits on her bum so to speak and stretches her legs out in front of her.

I have now noticed that she is starting to close her eyes alot and her feathers are starting to fall out slightly on her bum. She will get up and come out into the garden although close to the hen house and go back to bed again on her own but during the day she does hardley anything else. Her comb is still reasonably red.

As we have been to the vets three times and each time they are stumped I wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar. I have asked most people I know with chickens and no one has yet come up with an idea.

Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Sorry, I can't help - I'm new to Chooks myself. Is she an ex-Bat or rescue? How old is she? I only ask because I know someone else will. I have one who occasionally stays in one place with her eyes closed, and doesn't eat much. She does this for a couple of days, then reverts to normal. She is an ex-Bat, so I'm expecting she'll be the first to go .

Someone with more knowledge is bound to look in soon, meanwhile, good luck!

      Eee..they're a problem/worry aren't they?????

My thoughts were 'is she ex battery' too? ...over-sized maybe for her bone-calcium levels????....so...weak/painful bones/joints?????
I now understand that's the case with the 'meat chooks'..they must be from the same sort of breeding background?????

      just a thought???

I'd just try and keep her warm...well fed..and watered..and a bit of privacy..maybe she's needing some time to try and sort herself out...'survival of the fittest ' and all that????

Hope she's better soon- I can't think of what to suggest

Sorry to hear about your hen - doesn't sound good if she's starting close her eyes a lot

It sounds like she's in some kind of pain in her legs - if that's the case, tbh I don't think there's anything you can do for her. Chickens are too fragile to stand much veterinary treatment; if she doesn't pop off of her own accord, it might be kinder to have her put down. Sorry I can't offer any more help

I can't offer any more help than what's already been given really. Just in case it is something to do with bone strength, I'd be tempted to give her extra calcium and poultry spice, but apart from that ................... sorry

probably not good news but i was watching one of the vet programmes the other week, and a bloke had a cockerel that was doing the same thing, and after various treatments the (expert) vet had nothing lse to offer and he had to be put down .... sorry, hope she gets better xxx

Thanks for the wishes. She is a bought free range chicken. Not ex batt. She is just over a year old and is a little bigger than the other one we bought with her.

I have a bad feeling that we will need to say our goodbyes but wanted to try all other known paths before we did that.

              Will try calcium supplments

I'd pull her neck tbh with you. It sounds like a rubbed or worn bone which has sharpened. I had it happen to a Light Sussex. Not really worth operating on a hen!

How much have you spent on her so far?

                      Hello all,

Just to let you know have taken her to the vets again today. They were not keen to put her to sleep as she is still quite alert and eating so we are off to see a farm vet tomorrow evening.

                      Thanks
