  • My girls are revolting!

There's a mass revolt going on in Chuckingham Palace Mark 2!

At the weekend I completely spring-cleaned the coop, and as I was getting a little bit more than fed-up of the girls sleeping in the nest boxes and having to clean poo off the eggs every day, I put barricades up so they couldn't get in them after 4pm (when they'd all finished laying but before they thought about going to bed). Then, when I moved the barricades, they ripped out all the bedding from them and scattered it all over the floor of the coop and piled it all in a big heap in the middle. Now they're refusing to use the nest-boxes and are laying eggs in the corners of the coop instead! Oh well, at least the nest-boxes are still clean.
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

Chickens have more "up top" than I give them credit for! My old hen, Bright ,has stolen a nest in a bramble thicket where I have put two dummy eggs and pick up her real one when I go to shut them away. When I let them out in the morning she watches me like a hawk, scratches around in in the fruit bushes and waits for me to go out of the garden,(I can spy through the garage window!) then scuttles to her nest and lays her egg. I know that if she even suspected that I guessed her secret she would find another nest.
      Hens like to be mysterious!!

My brown girls used to sleep all crammed in the nest-box when I first got them, but the coop was small, and the roosting bars were too low. When I got the white ones and put them all in the new coop (converted shed) they did the same, but the white ones perched. Now they start off under the perches to keep warm, then when I've shut them in they get on the perches. Except for scruffy (still has hardly any wing feathers, and no shine to those feathers she has got) who sleeps in the 'bunk' (nest-box) on her own! Bless.

A lot of my eggs have been a bit mucky lately. Not poo mucky, but clarts mucky that they had on there feet.
They must be wiping there feet before entering the coop now (or it could be the ground is frosted) as the eggs are a lot cleaner recently!

PS Could have something to do with the extra cover I put over the coop entrance as well?
