Identify the chick?

Whatever it is, it is definitely NOT a cuckoo Marans. It may be a cross between Marans types, and one parent cuckoo (I don't know enough about breeds to tell) but cuckoo Marans are MUCH darker than that! (even the cockerels, which are lighter than hens)

I know thats not want you wanted to hear, but can't tell ya if it's got any maran in it, cos I can't even tell what a maran is yet.

This one is one I bought on behalf of a friend, just looking after it til it comes off heat. Might keep it now, Im interested to see what it will turn out to be!

Its very pretty but my marans were much more thickset than your pic. If this pic doesn't load you can see them in my album.................both these are cockerels.

Our Cuckoo was a dark chick with the autosexing white spot on his head. I think you may have a female there - Marans girly chicks are lighter. The barring is definitely there. Our cockerel is much lighter than Jess's.

She looks like my Cream Legbars and looking at her ears they look to have a bluey-green tinge. However they're NOT calm!

I don't know much about dominant genes in chickens but generally the barring in a Maran cuckoo colouring is dominant. My guess is that you have a cuckoo maran crossed with a chicken that has a dominant white gene. Have a look at this website which explains the genetics for white feathering White Marans

Once feathered, the cuckoo Marans female is a lot DARKER than her brothers (the cuckoos are the only ones I know at all well). I once had a very confusing cuckoo, hen-coloured body, pale head. Turned out to be a good hen, laid well first year, respectable layer second year, wonderful broody after that.
