Fertile eggs for broody girl

Hi Mandy, I gave in and ordered some mixed bantam hatching eggs for my broody off ebay yesterday. I didn't think hybrids were supposed to go broody but mine is about a year old and has been fluffed up and clucking (had to write that carefully!) fiercely for the last 5 days so looks like she really means business. I hesitate to mention that I bought them off e-bay, having seen such mixed comments but fingers crossed we will be lucky and Holly isn't just stringing me along! good luck with yours, Lynda

Try breeders near you. Or try Ebay and focus on eggs in your area and collect. You can name a distance from your post code you are prepared to travel on the left. I think it is best not to risk the postal system and also you get toe see how well the laying adults are cared for. Also Bird trader or Friday ad.

oh lord, do not try e bay whatever you do- what a bunch of crooks! practical poultry is great- join that and you will find what you seek. I don't post so can't help you- shame we have stacks of eggs and I need someone to try out our buff orps- the new cockerel needs testing!!!!!

I think tarring everyone who sells on ebay as crooks is very harsh indeed. I have bought eggs via ebay - though only ones I can go collect and see their set up myself.

The success rate has been very good - both for chicken's and quail. Frankly I've had more duff eggs at the poultry auction.

Check the feedback - I leave follow up feedback on hatching rates - it may annoy some sellers but I think its a reasonable thing to do

Presume you have a plan for the cocks Mandy? Only hatch if you actually want/need more chickens, if really all you want to do it for is break the broodiness then just put two eggs under her. I'm sure if you ask around you could get a couple of eggs from another keeper locally.

Or you may find someone who's desperate for a broody hen to hatch eggs for them! Then you get all the fun of watching them hatch and grow, and you give the chicks back when they're big enough. That's the theory anyway - I've promised to let a local enthusiast know if my broody goes broody again, and once she's vetted our space etc she can put her eggs under my hen, provided there's no hard feelings if it doesn't work... I figure it'd be a good way for me to learn too, just in case I decide to breed in the future

Thanks everyone,

I have found someone local and plan to collect 3 eggs tomorrow.

If they hatch they will go back to the other person.

Just want this little lady to have a go as she is so broody.

Keep you posted.

p.s I do have space for more just no cockerals!

Luck, pure luck. Not harsh at all, sorry- I tend to say what everyone is thinking- there are some right crooks on there, final- sorry- but we get so many people contacting us that have been conned- its not just money but electric and time, and disappointment.
If only everyone left feedback- have you ever had aggressive comments back? I hear that is the norm. I too avoid posted eggs of any kind - I insist to see the parent stock as we are breeding at a higher level than just pet quality- its very important to me as a breeder to maintain standards..most ebay sellers will not allow you to collect personally.
wouldn't touch a poultry auction with a barge pole either- disease can be brought in via hatching eggs!!!! Avoid!

Hey Mandy - My hen's gone broody again too, and I'm also getting some eggs for her next week I hope! First time for all of us... really looking forward to it, hope it all goes well because the chicks are expected home at some point! We'll have to compare notes!
