  • Chick litter

    Hi,

I've had my chickens for about 14 months now, I am so glad I got them.

I am about to start incubating 12 (hopefully) fertile eggs to bring on as replacements.

Has anybody used shredded paper for the chick litter in the brooder box? My shredder cuts the paper into 4mm*10mm pieces, and I have a ready supply.

    Any thoughts?

I think you may be thinking of the long strips. I have a cross cut shredder it sort of makes confetti. I've never found it sharp. Maybe I just need new blades

i used shavings and straw for mine, especially in the first week or 2 they will eat paper, (along with everything else) and we had a debate a few weeks ago about newspaper, and decided it might not be good for them, mine are 7-8 weeks old now, and still eat their straw or hay occasionally, but they don't eat shavings any more lol.
