  • Broken Off Chook Nail, help?

This evening whilst pecking and scratching about one of our chooks broke off her nail and it's bleeding pretty badly.
Just finished salt bathing it (poor dear is still a bit nervous and I'm sure this hasn't helped) and we're just wondering is there anything we can use to stop the blood. We should really have wound powder (be quite handy for if we cut the dogs nails to short to) but we don't currently have any or anything else to stop it. We've not got antiseptic spray either!
Also we've no super glue but if we have some in the future could we put that on it's nail?
So yes, just wondering what else can we put on.

    Thanks

I use potassium permanganate crystals on the dogs nails as its antiseptic as well as stopping the bleeding. I buy mine at the chemist. I think the same stuff is available at pet shops under the name Quick stop or something. DD used araldite on her elderly dog who used to drag his foot and made it bleed. Hope that helps and the chook is ok.

Ouch! poor chook. Hope you managed to get something to stop the bleeding. Keep an eye on her because if the others see blood they'll be attracted to it and start pecking at it

The same thing happened to me and unusually for me I had nothing in the house to hand...so...corn flour. Dab her toe in corn flower, then put her back in with the girls...by morning it'll have clotted, and she'll be fine to be with the others. Just restrict them for a while...don't let her scratch about as much as usual....or she'll start it off again.

It took mine about 10 weeks to grow hers back.
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

          Thanks very much everyone.

She seems fine today, carrying the leg a touch but not much. Even pecking after raisins like mad this afternoon.

I had this happen before. A nail came clean off and was bleeding so I bathed the foot and dried it and it still bled. I took some superglue and dunked the end of the toe in and hey hey!! It stopped.

                  Hahaha!

I knew someone would say it :-)

                  On a serious note - she's fine.
