    Will my lettuces by ok?

    Hello all and Happy New Year.

    I've got 5 "little gem" lettuces which were in the greenhouse but after realising the amount it was costing in parrafin just to keep 5 lettuces alive i've been bringing them into the kitchen overnight. (My spring onions are winter hardy ones so I presume they will be OK in the greenhouse still??)

    Will the lettuces be OK or will it be too hot for them. There is no heating in the kitchen so it's not as warm as the rest of the house but sometimes with the washing machine/dryer going of an evening it does get a little bit condensated.

    Also, is there anything I can start sowing now on windowsill's or in the greenhouse? A few of the seeds i've bought say you can sow from Feb onwards (Cucumbers and Peppers) but is it worth trying a bit earlier?

    Your lettuces have had it. Eat what you've got, don't waste any more energy on them. Summer lettuces actually like cool conditions (shaded by other crops, for example).


    If you want lettuce in winter, grow a winter lettuce, such as Winter Density, Arctic Gem or Rusty.

      They should be. They are hardy (that's the key word), so should be fine.

        Do what it says on the tin (packet)
        You can certainly try to sow earlier, just don't expect miracles, esp. while it is freezing and dark

        Cucumbers and peppers need fairly high temps to germinate ( day and night temps of about 18C ).

          I got confused and bought "little gem" seeds instead of "winter gem".

          You can probably tell i'm new to this LOL

            Now sit on your hands until it warms up a bit (May? lol), then get planting

              HT, when it's cold put some fleece over whatever you have in the greenhouse. It works really well and can be left on for days at a time.
