I got my watercress in a small pot from the supermarket.....(cant remember which one!), potted it on into a larger pot it's doing really well.....but the compost needs to be very wet all the time and standing in water

Someone posted recently that they bought a bag of watercress from the supermarket and popped some into water - rooted rapidly they said!!

I keep meaning to try it myself!!!!

^^ Yep - you can buy a bag of salad watercress and pop them in some water. Roots will appear in a few days, and you can pot them up!

I planted some seed a few weeks back,they germinated really quickly,but they seem really slow growing,not grown any before,is this normal?

The seedlings seem to hover at the very small stage and then suddenly you look round and you've got watercress, rather like cut and come again lettuce.
Be patient, keep them very damp and you'll have watercress!
PS Try landcress for winter, I'm a big fan of this, very similar plant but grows in the ground as per normal and is very hardy for all winter pickings.

Sue ,you're right,it's shot up just today,not yet eating size but finally moving.Next question is how to harvest without over doing it?
Tried the land cress 20 years ago and found it tough and bitter so didn't grow it again,could have been me doing something wrong though.

Just keep snipping bits off and as for Landcress, again keep picking when small, it will get tough by the end of winter but it should have done enough by then to have earned its keep.
I also leave it till last to be dug up which means it flowers and gives the bees something else to feed on. Mind you the roots are enormous by then so more work digging it out but there you go.

Have grown two trough fulls of watercress - they need to be kept very wet (variety Aqua - can't remember the brand) - one for us and one for my dad. Don't take long to germinate and once they get gowing was cutting them by the large handful.

Got my watercress seeds from Wilkinsons - don't know if they have one near you!! I just plant it as normal in a really big pot and sit the pot in a tray so the compost is always damp, or you could plant it in a shady corner of the garden. I water it really well with fresh water from the kitchen tap and so long as its kept in the shade it will romp away very happily. Keep picking it and make sure it doesn't go to seed and you should have watercress for ages!!

I much prefer it to landcress which I have also got growing at the moment - bit too strong for me!!
