  • What to plant next?

    Hi,

I have a space on my raised bed measuring about 1.5m x 1.75m and I'm stumped as to what next to grow.

I already have: Tomatoes, chillies, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, aubergines, beans, sprouts, strawberries, courgettes and a herb garden.

I wanted to do some lettuce but is it too late?

Bought a book called "The Vegetable & Herb Expert" by Dr D G Hessayon which I'm gonna kick back with in bed tonight however just thought I'd put it past you guys....

    Any suggestions?

Where's your beetroot and spring onions, and have you sown your winter brassicas yet?

Lettuces can be sown as late as august, if you choose for example mizunas or a butterhead these will grow through the winter and won't bolt until next spring. Summer lettuces can still be sown for a few weeks yet.

      I have beetroot seeds!

Is it too late to plant these into the ground?

No it isn't - I'm going to be succession sowing every few weeks until August. I love Beetroot.

Have you got spring onion seeds?

Yep I didn't mention I have spring onions growing on a massive tray. I'm thinking of something like sweetcorn?

Sweetcorn - it is a tad late to be sowing now....but if you go to a nursery you might find some selling it [my local one had a punnet of 12 for £2.50 on Friday].

you can get some dwarf French beans in now ... they mature sooner than climbers. I grow loads of them to use dried as kidney beans

Thanks. We have a winner. Think I'll do the French bean thing but also pay a little visit to the nursery! Never been to one before are they the same as garden centres?

Garden centres are for people who like gnomes, trampolines and chimey things in their garden
Nurseries are for people who actually want to grow plants
