Plant em out, let them grow, and when the tops turn yellow they should be ready to crop. Without knowing the variety, you wont know if they are the overwintering type, those need a period of cold weather for the bulbs to split, if they are, then you may just get one big bulb from each plant, still edible, just has to be used in one go! If its spring planting type, then you may be ok and they may split into individual cloves!

Like Mrs D. says, they should be ready to harvest when the tops turn yellow, normally this is about August time, so they've got a way to go yet, good luck

i'm growing some spring planting garlic if you want any advice/comparisons, although it is my first year!
they are pretty tall too, some of them maybe 2 ft

For newbie garlic growers, I got told today, don't worry if it goes to seed, nothing wrong, just the orginal clove seeding, there will be a bulb underneath.

Hi Elsie-Scot - can you explain this further?
i'm intrigued
i am growing Sultop - a spring planting variety and i have read that ou can harvest the scapes after they've curled a few times and before flowering, to get a second harvest and also push the garlic back into bigger clove production

Ah so, the clove grows the bulb underneath, wondered how the magic happens!
Not sure if spring or winter as they are just supermarket buys not overly big bulbs.
So when they go yellow dig them up and string together? oh and how long do they take to dry?

they can only be strung together if they are softneck varieties but most in this country are i believe
but yes wait until they go yellow and die down then pick and dry out
someone very familiar with drying out should come along soon!!!

the tops of my garlic that was planted last october which are about two and a half feet tall are starting to collapse, does anyone know why this is happening

Hi,

Could be normal, what is the water situation like where you are? Is it dry/wet?

Are the leaves going yellow?

Are they all doing it or only a couple?

Mine are about 2ft tall at the moment, the tips are bending over ie about 20-30% of the leaves this seems normal.

Typically only pull them when they have gone yellow and wilted.
