Grow Your Own Magazine

Well, I've lost my allotment virginity! Planted my first ever thing yesterday. Planted Maris Peer tatties and marked out a few more beds. The allotment has almost run out of manure - is it usual that more is delivered throughout the year?

Also, I sowed some carrot and courgette seeds, put them in propagators and left them in my mini greenhouse yesterday and today (in overnight). I'm going to sow some more seeds this weekend when I get some more trays (Onions, Parsnips, Cauliflower & Brussels Sprouts.

Stood in the sunshine yesterday made me look forward to the summer months so much!

Oh, I also met one of my "neighbours" who told me that the chap before me always did well on my plot. He didn't grow much, but what he did grow, grew well. Diss iz good nooz! He also thinks that my apple tree is an eating apple tree - woohoo!

Don't know where you are HW .But are there any farms close to you.
Some farms are only too glad to get rid of muck for free. But asking does no harm.
You also obviously need transport, we only have a Pergeot 107 but can get 2 or 3 cwt a trip.

We do get manure delivered by a local farmer (there are quite a fewe locally). The allotment pays him £5 (travel expenses) for a ruddy great mound of the stuff.

If you're after more manure, you could always find a local riding school - they often have tons of horse manure!

If you need to use it now, you really need to be finding some well rotted manure.
I suggest you get twice as much as you think you'll need and any left over can rot down further for the autumn mucking.

If you are excited now, then wait to see how you feel when the tatties push leaves up through the soil!!!

Surprising how satisfying it feels digging a hole and putting a tattie in it! Because I was keeling down, I somehow (and this is going to sound REALLY strange) felt a bit more connected with them.

I have got quite a bit of space, so that would be feasible. Might see what I can find....

As for checking on them today - if you mean the seeds, then yes I will when I get in after going to the gym. If you mean the tatties, I might pop in en route from said gym - watering can in hand.

dont over water your tatties this time of year there is plenty of moisture inthe soil.
as to your parsnips the grapes on here swear by pre-germinating on damp kitchen towel in a clear plastic bag or propagator. i tried and it works best germination i have had
