  • Spuds - where to buy

I know i'm a little late but i'd like to have a go at growing some of my own spuds. I have a bag of supermarket spuds sprouting well in their packaging but i'm guessing these wont be much use.

I'd like a variety that i can grow in bags, can anyone make any suggestions on type and where to purchase them from please?

You're way too late to buy seed spuds. They go on sale around Feb

As TS says, bit too late to buy seed potatoes, but still worth having a bash with the supermarket ones you have. Put about 4" compost in a bucket sized pot, put in 2 or 3 spuds and cover with another 4" or so of compost - take care not to break the sprouts. As the leaves appear add more compost until you are within 2" of the top of the pot. Might not produce a huge yield, but fun and good experience for next season.

      Good luck,

Thnak you both for your replies, hopefully i'll see everyone elses posts when they buy next years seed potatoes and i'll be more organised.

I will give the supermarket 'white potatoes' a go. Would one of those flower buckets you get from supermarkets be ok to plant them in (i'm not expecting large potatoes just little ones i can boil).

Hayley I grow just one potato in those flower buckets, if you have one of those cheap shops near you they might have seed potatoes left over might be worth a look.

With worth checking out your local Homebase apparently they are clearing out old stock which includes potatoes, either free to a good home or massively reduced pricing.

I was in Wilkinsons last weekend and they still had seed potatoes, however I would give your supermarket ones a go. I have seed potatoes in my main bed and shop bought ones in a bag and both are doing okay.

So you nee to buy a waxy potato variety that holds its shape whilst boiling

Bought some strips of spring onions, leeks and white onions reduced from £2 to 20p. No spuds there!

I was going to buy more potatoes, but a different variety, Red Duke of York £3.99 plus delivery 2,5 kilos. I wish I had a Homebase here.
