  • Spent potato compost and cutworms

Hi everyone, this is my first post so I hope I've put it in the right place.

I'm quite new to growing veggies, and gardening in general. I harvested my crop of potatoes today (Lady Balfour, pretty bland but blight resistant) from two special potato growing sacks. Got about 60 tubers, I'm not sure if that's good or not, but I'm pretty happy as it's my first attempt.

I know from reading that you're not supposed to use old potato compost on the garden in case it harbours blight, but since I never plan to plant potatoes or tomatoes in my veggie plot, only ever in pots/hanging baskets, is there any harm in my dumping the spent stuff into my compost bins?

Also, when I emptied one of the sacks I found it was home to several bugs that my book tells me are cutworm, although they don't appear to have done any damage to my tatties. I'm Buddhist, so I don't believe in killing without reason. At the moment I've just put the spent compost, cutworms and all, back into the empty potato bag. Would it be ok to dump this into the compost bin too, or will the larvae go dormant and be a problem next year instead of pupating and flying away as moths?
Will they be a problem if I just leave them outside in the bag for a few weeks until they leave of their own accord?

Thanks in advance for any answers
