  • Seedling problems

Can anyone help, I recently sowed several batches of seed in some compost purchased from B and Q, unfortuneately whilst the seed have germinated they have failed to develop beyond the first two leaf stages, this applied tochillies, and brassica seedlings, My mange tout seedlings have also stopped as well. Any options for feeding etc or do I just ditch the lot and start again?

    Any help would be welcome.

What is happening to the seedlings? Are they dying or just not growing as fast as you expect?
    Happy Gardening,

      Are they still healthy looking?

They are hopefully growing some nice roots for you.

They are just not doing anything, planted chillies late Jan in heated propagator 22-25 degrees, still only 4 leaves. Cabbages planted 13/3 still only 2 leaves, Chard similar and yellow, Mange tout have spent the last 2 weeks with only just the tips out of the compost and no growth. It it too much to expect some effort from them?? Maybe they just need some motivation. I will take them and show them the compost heap and give them a stern warning. That should do it!!

I've got kinda similar problems. I don't have a greenhouse so my plants are on the windowsil. They are getting very leggy and bending towards the light. I keep turning them around but I'm starting to get worried about them. They are lettuce and cabbage seedlings but they haven't got their real leaves yet? What should I do with them please?

Chillies take ages to do anything, then come on in a rush. I have Caulies I planted in Feb and they are about 4" tall, but won't be ready to go out for another 3 weeks. I also have Cabbage planted about the same time as yours and are about at the same stage. Never grown Chard or Mangy Trout, so I have no idea, but I would imagine they will grow similarly. Keep watching, they'll come through before planting-out time.

Thanks Norm. I think I am suffering from novice panic.

My chillis look just the same, I figure they will grow when they feel like it
Love the idea about showing them the compost heap

I think this is pretty normal for early spring sowings - the plants shoot up, using the energy stored in the seed, then grind to a halt because they only have two little seed leaves to do all the photosynthesizing and there isn't enough daylight. I don't know how it is in Aberdeen, but the last week has been very overcast and gloomy down south - great for establishing newly-potted-on tomatoes, but not much growth happening.

                    Thank you

Thanks everyone I will wait a little longer for some action. I have seated them within view of the compost heap and a freshy prepared bed. Carrot and stick approach!
