Grow Your Own Magazine

Overexcited newbie back again - during my sowing frenzy earlier this year I decided to try growing melons in the greenhouse. I planted my 2 beautiful little plants in a grow bag and in my excitement obviously neglected to read the instructions properly. Having invested in The Fruit Expert today I now realise I should have trained the plants up a support instead of letting it crawl all over the floor -d'oh! (wondered why everyone was talking about stockings!)

As someone who obviously needs adult supervision at all times, I really want to know if the beautiful fruit I've grown is likely to perish on the floor or if there is anything I can do to save them? So when you've all stopped laughing, I'd really appreciate some advice They're currently about 8x6 inches and very healthy looking, as are the plants.

On the positive side, I'm very excited to report successful harvests so far this year of raddish, lettuce, summer squash, courgettes, 3 varieties of tomatoes (another 2 & a half pounds tonight!), carrots, peas, blueberries, gooseberries, strawberries, apples and pears. Not sure if anyone's interested other than me, but I'm so chuffed with this first year's efforts that I just thought I'd mention it - I doubt I'd have been so adventurous or successful without the advice given by Dragonz and Jaxom re sq foot gardening when I was faced with an empty raised bed - so thanks guys

Bibliobeck, sit the melons on top of flowerpots to take the weight off the plant, maybe put some straw in the pot to save it being marked or damaged and they should be ok.

For goodness sake don't let Nick see this thread, who knows what might happen!!!

Now this is gonna sound wrong, but...any chance of a picture of your melons BB?

Since you asked so nicely smallbluemanda...here they are Well here one of them is. As you can see it's balancing on newspaper until I can beg some straw from someone. I take it they should dangle from a support to prevent them resting on one place too long?? Anyway they seen happy enough at the moment!
I did wonder how other people coped walking about in the greenhouse with these happy ramblers on the floor

We let our melons ramble along the wooden staging in the green house and hang the ones the insist in hanging over the edge in the nets you get covering the punets you buy peaches/plums ect from the supermarket.
