I am hoping to set up a bee hive in a field close to our childrens nursery. I was told that if you grow a hedge 6 or 8 ft high around the bee hives it will force the bees to fly up to that height before they fly off gathering pollen. Thus they are less likely to bother people. As leylandii are the fastest growing hedge, I would like to proagate a number to form the hedge. Any suggestions please.

Leylandii is a nightmare - because it is the fastest growing hedge! Once it gets to height you are going to have to maintain it as it will still be trying to grow 3 feet a year ...

... I would recommend Thuja plicata (atrovirens would be my choice).

But having said that I have never been able to grow conifers from cuttings

Might be worth looking for Rooted Cuttings on Google? For things I've looked for, in bulk, they work out around 10p-20p each, rather than £££ per plant

Additional thought: plant a hedge-of-your-choice and also plant Leylandii on the North side (or whatever provides shelter for the choice-hedge. Fell the Leylandii when the "choice-hedge" is at the desired height.

Willow is extremely fast-growing, you could make a 'living fence/fedge' out of it. But could be as much of a problem as leylandii if you let it get out of hand and don't prune it.
