    on saturday i put the following on damp kitchen paper;

    peas - sugar snap
    peas - delicata
    sweetcorn

    looked at them daily but nothing until today,

    i have 5 of the sugar snaps and 8 of the delicata with long roots , are these ok to plant now?

    i've been saving yoghurt pots to put them in until they are big enough to plant out will they be ok in these?

    Yes, I'd plant them. Just be very careful not to damage the roots when handling.

    I think you have sown the sweetcorn too early though.

        I would sow them in April, i.e. about a month before I expect the last frosts in my area.

        The problem with seed packets is that they try to cover the widest possible range of climatic conditions in the country where they are being sold, which is not very useful to real-world gardeners. Maybe folks down in the Channel Islands can get away with a March sowing, but the rest of us will have to be more patient

          And make a small hole in the bottom of the yoghurt pots to make sure the water doesn't sit around the roots and drown the plants.

            at least we dont have long to wait until April Eyren, all this growing business is exciting i just want it all happening yesterday. not been too successful with seeds so far so sprouting anything is a real bonus.

              My allotment book says to sow them indoors 5 - 6 weeks before the last frost date in your area, and allow them 2 weeks of good hardening off (taking them outside during the day, cold greenhouse, cold frame, etc) before planting.

              5 sweetcorn wouldn't really be enough for anything though, would it? You need to plant them in blocks for them to wind pollinate and I wouldnt' have thought you would get much pollination from just 5.

                  Sweetcorn, how do you grow yours?
                  Have a look at this thread, there is a discussion on how people are growing their sweetcorn, maybe it could help you!

                      I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite,the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
