  • Opinions on latest my newbie plan

    Hello there

After your opinions and or advice on some growing I've got planned!

I got one of these Botanica Pots the other day. It looks like a good way to keep the roots moist without over watering.

I thought I could use some plumbing pipe to deliver water straight to the bottom using a small funnel.

Then I can stand it in a sill tray and water until it comes out the overflow.

Have germinated some basil (in front) and leaf salad (lettuce mix) in coir pots which I'm just thinking of planting straight into the trough in their coirs, in this same formation.
(The salad is a bit leggy - one night too long in the headed prop.)

So I'm just wondering how you think this sounds?

And would like to hear any suggestions of other things to try growing in this if you think this isn't perhaps the best use for it?
(I mean I can grow basil in 3" pots right)

    Cheers!

Another suggestion is water bottles; cut top off, make drainage holes, insert upside down back into the base, insert pipe or hose (to water later), add some gravel (so compost doesn't sit in water), insert compost, add plant. Works best 8L bottles. See my blog to see finished product, but it basically becomes of one of those fancy expensive reservoir plant pots

How about spring onions, radishes, parmex carrots, beetroot as baby beet? Difficult to gauge the depth of the trough but you could perhaps grow some toms in it or cucumbers.

        Thanks guys, for the suggestions.
Got spring onions, radishes and carrots growing outside... was thinking this would be more useful for things that really don't tolerate watering from above, like basil etc.
It's only about 5" or 6" deep (it is 18" long).

My basil seems to be doing OK and today I just planted in some Rocket that I sowed in coir pots in a heated propagator on 26/04. (I abandonned the leggy lettuce)

Watering through the 1/2" pipe works just as I hoped - the overflow spills into a sill tray which has room for a couple of 3" pots.
