  • Onion seeds?????

    On the top of my onion leaves there are little tiny bulb looking things on the seed head, are they baby onions?

    Could i plant them for next years harvest?

    If so when should i take them off?

    Heres a piccy;

    SD- you can certainly plant those little bulbs which I believe the correct term for is 'bulbil'.

    I'd wait a while until they ripen and swell - the plant below might look quite sad during this process - so long as you no longer need the onion below for this year's eating. You'll not likely get a first year crop from the bulbils (2/3yrs) but it will be interesting to see what you get from an original set of sets/seeds.

    Some may be seed heads and the goodies will be inside - not easy to tell which are actual bulbils or seed heads - but protect and save and enjoy what happens next year!
